Medicare Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is Medicare and who qualifies?
Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people:
-
Age 65 or older
-
Under 65 with certain disabilities
-
Any age with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or ALS
If you’re a U.S. citizen or lawful resident for at least five years, you may qualify for Medicare benefits.
2. What’s the difference between Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement?
Medicare Advantage (MAPD) plans are all-in-one plans offered by private insurance companies. They usually include:
-
Medical coverage (Part A & B)
-
Prescription drug coverage (Part D)
-
Extra benefits like dental, vision, hearing, and more
Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans work alongside Original Medicare to help cover costs like deductibles and coinsurance.
Key difference: MAPD plans often have lower premiums but require you to use a provider network. Medigap plans have higher premiums but offer more freedom to see any doctor nationwide that accepts Medicare.
3. How much will I pay for Medicare?
In 2026, most people will pay $185/month for Part B. This is required whether you choose Original Medicare, a Medicare Advantage plan, or a Supplement plan.
You may also pay:
-
A monthly premium for your plan (some MAPD plans have $0 premiums)
-
Copays or coinsurance depending on the plan
-
More if your income is higher, due to a Medicare IRMAA surcharge on Part B and/or Part D
We’ll review all your costs clearly so you know exactly what to expect.
4. When can I enroll in or switch Medicare Advantage plans?
You can enroll or make changes during:
-
Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): When you first become eligible for Medicare
-
Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): October 15 – December 7 (every year)
-
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MA-OEP): January 1 – March 31
-
Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs): If you move, lose coverage, or qualify for extra help
5. Do Medicare Advantage plans include prescription drug coverage?
Yes. Most Medicare Advantage plans are called MAPDs—they include Part D prescription drug coverage for medications, diabetic supplies, and vaccines. If your MAPD doesn’t include drug coverage, you cannot add a separate Part D plan unless you switch back to Original Medicare.
6. What are dental, vision, and hearing benefits in Medicare Advantage plans?
Many MAPD plans offer extra benefits that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, such as:
-
Dental: cleanings, exams, fillings, and sometimes dentures
-
Vision: eye exams, glasses, or contact lenses
-
Hearing: hearing tests and hearing aid allowances
These benefits vary by plan and location. We’ll help you compare what’s available in your zip code.
7. Are Medicare Advantage plans free?
No, Medicare Advantage plans are not free. Even if a plan has a $0 monthly premium, you still pay your Part B premium ($185/month).
You'll also have out-of-pocket costs like:
-
Copays for doctor visits, specialists, and hospital stays
-
A yearly maximum out-of-pocket limit that protects you from high costs
