Why Plan Hopping Could Hurt You More Than Help You

Every fall, during the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), you’re bombarded with commercials, mailers, and calls promising you “the best” Medicare Advantage plan. Many people are tempted to switch — and sometimes it makes sense. But switching plans just because something looks shiny or sounds better can lead to serious headaches.
Let’s talk about why “plan hopping” without guidance could cost you more than you save.
### 1. You Could Lose Your Doctor or Pharmacy
Not all plans have the same provider networks. A plan might offer amazing dental or a higher giveback — but if your primary doctor or preferred pharmacy isn’t covered, you’re stuck finding a new one or paying out-of-network costs.
Always check provider and pharmacy directories before enrolling in any new plan. Better yet — let me help you verify it.
### 2. Your Medication Coverage Might Change
Different plans use different formularies (lists of covered drugs). The same medication can cost drastically more on one plan than another, or even be excluded altogether. Plan materials won’t always make this clear unless you dig deep — or work with someone who knows what to look for.
When I do a drug review, I make sure your prescriptions are not only covered but affordable under the new plan.
### 3. Benefits Aren’t Always What They Seem
Free gym memberships and large OTC cards are great — but what if the dental coverage is only for cleanings? Or the transportation benefit only covers a few miles?
It’s easy to get excited by flashy extras, but the core benefits (like hospital copays, specialist access, and out-of-pocket max) are usually what matter most. A “better” plan on paper might leave you paying more in the long run.
### 4. You Can’t Just Switch Again
After AEP ends, you only get **one** chance to switch during the Open Enrollment Period (January 1 – March 31). If you change again and it doesn’t work out, you’re likely stuck until the next AEP — unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
This is why I encourage thoughtful decision-making, not reactive switching.

### So What’s the Solution?
Simple: before you make any changes, **call or text me**. I’ll help you compare benefits, verify your providers and prescriptions, and ensure that a new plan truly meets your needs.
Sometimes the plan you have is already your best option. And if a change does make sense, we’ll do it with full clarity — not just because of an ad or flyer.
Protect your benefits, your access to care, and your peace of mind.
